General History Of The Sexes

This is a brief background to the three enA ("sexes"). The very definitive divisions in the society between the roles the gA, kA, and tA play can be seen through the evolution of the third race, the gA.

The Conditions

For a very long time, possibly tens of thousands of years, there were only two enA, the tA and the kA. The roles that either of them played was fairly indeterminate. Both served as protectors from external agents, and as gatherers. It was not until there was a strong move towards civilization that this balance ended.

Initially the edisA were content living with nature and not trying to make any progress. Only when supplies ran short did a change occur. The supply that ran short was edisk, which is the basic source of substinance for the edisA. It is a material that can be found along veins underground. It isn't that hard to find as the edisA do live underground for the most part and continually expand their living space. The edisk looks very similar to red lava, and glows slightly.

The shortage of edisk in the major populous of the edisA forced the group to split up. It was decided that two major groups would form, and each head their separate ways. Only a few would be left behind, in what was to become known as the mork-naort-A (lit. "The beginning of the community"). Those that composed the naort-A mork would serve a major in role in the future of the edisA, but is beyond the topic of this essay.

So the two groups emerged to the surface of the planet. They looked at each other, showed signs of affection, but left saying kgra ("a happy salutation"). For this was the beginning, not the end. With that they both began walking across the barren land of the surface.

kA-morg

The group that would become later known as the kA-morg was very lucky in their voyage. Within several months they came across a mountain range rich with edisk. The natural caves served as pre-made homes that would allow for an easy establishment of a new society.

As the arrangement had initially indicated, a representative was sent back to mork-naort-A to give news of their finding. The representative went back, but to his surprise found only caved in entrances to their underground world. No signs of survivors could be found.

gA-morg

The not-so-lucky group would later become known as the gA-morg. They went several months without finding even a tiny vein of edisk. The groups suppplies were running low, and unless they found any trace of edisk soon, several would perish from lack of substinance.

One was chosen as a representative to hurry back and bring the bad news. Before this individual could leave an even occured that literally split the two groups of edisA from each other. A massive earthquake rumbled for several days, the gA-morg had to run to escape the disasterous effects.

When it was over there was a large chasm that ran across the path they had travelled on. It was several hundred of meters across, and up to a thousand meters deep. At the bottom of the chasm was a river of lava that flowed continuously. Oddly though the river did not flow anywhere in particular, it switched directions occasionally and generally just bubbled and formed whirlpools. The great chasm became known as the ktar-A (lit. "authoritative crack").

An observation made of the chasm though was that edisk lined its walls. More edisk than had ever been seen before. However the supply started at a point more than a hundred meters down. This posed a definite problem to the group.

This is truly where the third sex, the gA began to form.

Evolution

The group had no choice but to stop and try to find a way to get to the edisk below. Before continuing we must mention that these groups were not small, but instead consisted of thousands of individuals, no actual count had been recorded.

Some simply tried to scale down the walls and reach the food, some were successful, but more than 90% of those who tried failed, falling into the lava below. It was not that there was a difficulty in climbing, for the edisa los were more than equipped to deal with it. But the wall was very unstable, and large sections would simply come loose.

It was observed however that these sections were not very large, and three or four people would easily be able to span the areas. This theory was checked, on the side of caution, as groups of ten kA (the tA were encouraged not to try this, as they are quite physically weaker than the kA). The groups had a higher rate of success then individuals did, but for the most part the added weight just caused larged sections of the wall to give way. This lead to about a 50% success ratio, definitely not good enough to sustain both a food supply and a population.

Some external support agent was required if they were to have access to the edisk below. It was purely by accident that the answer was found. An individual kA got extremely angry at this situation and started thrasing at the ground below. By doing this he exposed the roots of the very tiny vegetation on the surface, the sart. The sart had a very thick, yet very flexible root. It's true strength was discovered only when they tried to pull it from the earth, and it simply broke instead of coming out.

The work began, to dig up this roots. Everybody joined in this. It was a very slow process, and in the meantime the supplies still needed to be replenished. This meant several more would have to scale down the walls getting food. Also, the strenghts and effectiveness of the roots had to be tested, which basically meant several using them to scale the wall. The number of casualities started to go down as more and more effective use of the sart was discovered.

A secure method was eventually found. A sort of rope was formed from the sart root, strong enough to lower an individual over the edge and bring back up edisk. This process was fully secured only after several months of essentially sacrificing individuals to keep the group alive. The ratio of tA to kA was somewhere aroudn 15 to 1.

At this time something very interesting started to develop. The evolution that took place was based on a very unusual set of events. The strongest were used to gather edisk, and thus were what was keeping the society alive. With such a low population, there was little time to do anything other than gather edisk.

Those that gathered the edisk were very tired from the work, and only went to sleep afterwards. They fell into a continuous circle of working then sleeping, with only minimal time in between to eat.

But there were the weaker of the kA, or those that were just too physically inept to be of any value to get the edisk. Note that they had no advantages over the kA, in all respects they were either equal, or disadvantaged. Nonetheless they needed something to occupy their time.

This other group helped dig up the sart and helped making the ropes that were used. Several however spent their time trying new things with the sart, and were able to come up with several stronger weaves and more efficient uses of the resulting rope.

Several of this new group even started doing scouting missions to find new sources of the sart, and to find other materials. Within close range to their new settlement was found the serki. The serki is a stalk plant, very strong and quite black. It was initially passed over as unusuable, but it's location marked down just in case.

This very primitive form of existence went on for several hundreds of years, and even after that time evolved only slightly in the following couple of thousand years.

At this point something should be said of the kA-morg, the group that was "lucky" in their quest. They had long since used up their supply and had to move on. They were forced to travel very frequently, as the supplies of edisk near the surface are very limited. Their population however did manage to grow, but they continued to face the problem of shortage. Several smaller groups began to form and split off from the main group.

The Major Event

There was actually no major event that formed the third race of the edisA, it was actually more of the conditions faced in the gA-morg group.

As mentioned the stronger kA did nothing more than continually gather food support the "growing" population. Yes, indeed the population was growing. But quite literally the stronger kA had no time for anything else other than sleeping and working, so then who was responsible for the population increase?

As it turned out, the other kA that were scouts and those that experimented and played with the sart, also had plenty of time for edisA-bora ("procreation"). It has be noted that during this time the strong kA either didn't care about what was happening, or simply did not know.

With only the weaker kA producing children the population that could actually get edisk began to get seriously low. It was at this time that the serki came back into the picture.

This trend was noticed, but nothing could been done about it if the group was to continue to survive, that is the strong kA would have to continue to spend their lives gathering edisk. To be distinguished from the stronger kA, the weaker ones simply chose to being calling themselves the gA.

This transition in the name was not totally arbitrary. For the most part the sounds of 'g' and 'k' had been used interchangably in the language, a limited language still at this point. The new gA actually had a more physical tendency to produce the sound 'g', and thus it was only natural for the name gA to come about. At this time however the gA were still very much kA in terms of sexes.

But about the serki... The gA noted that if the kA were slowly disappearing, and it had already gone too long for any kA to replenish their population, the kA must spend time putting up a permanent infrastructure, rather than simply gather edisk.

The years to come were very difficult for everybody, as the supply of edisk had been reduced from further deaths, and the allocation of the kA to building rather than gathering. During this time it was left to the tA to appropriately raise the children.

This is how the serki came in. One remembered that the material was very hard, so it's harvest began. From it they built platforms, which were used to lower into the chasm to bring up more edisk at a time. But more importantly it could be used to dig the ground, and to form ladders.

Excavating the ground was very important, for as the population increased the available natural dwellings were becoming overcrowded, and the ground was simply too hard to dig without the used of some foreign object. At this time the great turn in their society began, as an actual civilication started to form.

The edisk could be gathered quickly, and there was plenty of housing to allow the population to continue growing. The same problem still existed however, the strong kA were rapidly disappearing.

karkA

The population of the strong kA had indeed dropped so low that they would simply not be able to procreate enough to form a new population with the strong kA. And to the gA this was not a problem for they had everything under control without the help of the strong.

Somewhere at 1000 years after the ground split, there was a genetic difference becoming predominant in the gA class. Indeed the gA actually started to become a different sex. And as it turns out, when the gA procreate the only offspring they have will be gA, and when the kA procreate they will have only kA. This meant that even if the stronger gA would increase their procreation, the number of strong that would be formed, in the available time span would simply not be enough to create enough kA to sustain the building.

So as the kA disappeared, the remaining spent their life in basic slavery building more and more. Eventually they dug deep enough into the veins of the edisk that there was no need to dare the walls of the chasm. There was a huge network of passageways and rooms now, enough to sustain a population much larger than what currently existed.

The final kA was called karkA, his significance in the history of the edisa is immense. karkA was being forced to work continually, never having a chance to rest, or have any kind of fun. The rest of the society, now composing purely of gA and tA went about their business, many thought that there were already no kA left, and had though that for hundreds of years already.

karkA had become a yaoekA ("senior") but was still being forced to work. He had only one supervisor wathcing over him, gorgA. gorga had not choice but to force karkA to work, it helped that gorgA didn't mind forcing karkA to work. One day karkA get very tired and simply fell asleep while working.

gorgA ordered him to continue. karkA was awoken and forced to dig, he successfully punctured a whole in the ground that opened into the great chasm. karkA screamed at gargA for his incompetance, they had wasted the entire day digging this new passageway. gargA defended his position and accused karkA of being just another stupid kA.

karkA took great offense to this and with a never before seen aggression attacked gargA. garge picked up a shoot of serki and hit karkA over the head. karkA fell to the floor, and without thinking gargA hit him again. karkA was killed by gargA. gargA dropped the serki, and quickly pushed the body of karkA into the lava in the chasm.

gargA ran to the surface, calling everybody up as he came out. When he reached the surface he explained that karkA fell to his death in the chasm, and declared there were no more kA left in the society.

As it turns out the need for kA was greatly overestimated, as the society functioned quite well without them for several hundreds of years. But as time progressed they eventually saw the degradation of all of their equipment and network of passageways. And there was no interest by the gA to continue building, so a shortage of space was eminant.

During the time gargA setup what was to be considered the very first primitive forms of government and law. The sek ("law") consisted solely of not killing another edisA. There was no punishment stated, and no conditions given, it was a simple statement that one edisA should never kill another edisA. Many questioned where this ruling came from, as nobody had ever considered doing something such as killing another, and as to why gargA had thought of this. Nonetheless people looked at gargA as a very strong leader, and that single statement eventually lead to the reunification of the kA with the gA, and tA.
