Rage

(c)Abhorrent

Review by Neil St.Laurent

CD provided by the band

As with a lot of albums now, "Rage" opens with an acoustic intro, with a little bit of synth to complete the sound. And without ado the intro breaks into the riffing of "Let Me Live". And what nice riffing it is. Strong, deep, and fast, the guitar rhythms are a driving force in this music. Not a wonder, since they cite some classic metal and power metal influences on their bio. Nicely tuned down, and everpresent, the guitars provide a definite heaviness to the album. When they do make a presence, the leads are quite interesting for a metal album. Layered over the fast flow of music comes a relatively slow and simple lead, adding quite a nice sound to the music. Not being able to resist the urge, Abhorrent brings in the guitar solos as well, and in an area where almost everything has been done they manage to find a few original sounding solos.

Something that does manage to stand out on the album is the wonderful drumwork of Fabricio Cinelli. This is probably in part due to that he is the only guy in the band that likes to play his instrument (kind of funny, the bio states he likes to play drums, the other members it doesn't say they like to do what they do on the album, indeed, Marcus doesn't even like music according to the bio :) The beat is normally fast and intense and manages to work in quite a variety. Fabricio keeps the consistency one would find in a drum machine (and often the speed). While this keeps some emotion out of the music, it is nonetheless quite impressive.

Abhorrent has a very similar sound throughout. They have a definite style and are sticking to it. There isn't too much bad one could say about this album (other than Aldeoli's less than understandable method of singing english in his otherwise suitable vocals). It would definitely be interesting to see them play live, for I feel the album doesn't portray enough emotion at times; it just didn't shine through in the recording. So at times during the album you may find it getting a little boring, but songs like "The Witch" and "Face Of Terror" should easily bring back your strayed attention.

"Rage" is a damn good metal album. Heavy, intense, and packed full of riffing and fast drumming. All combined with an almost growling, deep vocal delivery of quite decent lyrics, "Rage" is definitely an album worthy of obtaining.
