Review by Neil St.Laurent

If you are looking to get into listening to industrial this compilation introduces you to three distinct sounding bands of the genre. However this compilation does contain a lot of remixes, so if you aren't fond of remixes stay away from this.

Cubanate (From the CD "Barbarossa") - These guys sound a lot like NIN. Very much a metal industrial sound. Distorted samples of guitars and standard noises. Sequencing the various riffs with a pounding drum produces a very intense, yet not very fast, sound. Topped off with shouting distorted vocals. "Exultation" offers a very upbeat intense song that is stylistically similar to Butthole Surfers. Or I suppose you could argue that it sounds more like Ministry, either way it's a very good industrial song, just a bit too repetitive. "Skeletal" is a techo mix of some other song. I'm not very good on my techo terms at the moment so I can't say as to what variety of techno it's classified as.

Think About Mutation (From the CD "Hellraver") - The insert is wrong in stating this is from "Hellraver". For most of the Think About Mutation tracks are remixes of a song called "Motorazor", which most likely comes from the "Motorazor" CD, and definitely doesn't come from the "Hellraver" CD. "Motorazor" is a decent song, it's fairly intense and holds a steady beat. Think About Mutation doesn't hide the techo elements, and isn't afraid to do something a little different by having death metal style vocals, along with clean vocals. Four remixes of the song "Motorazor" is just too much to handle though, and is not a fair representation of what Think About Mutation sounds like. See the review of "Hellraver" this issue for more from this band.

Oomph! (From the CD "Defekt") - Oomph! is the least industrial sounding band of the bunch. They adopt a less rigid structure and venture a lot more into the area of metal. A lot more than normal industrial is the emphasis put on the lead singer (yes, actaul singing). "Asshole" is a fairly aggressive song, not really classifyable as any particular style of metal. It comes with a strong pounding and some intense guitar sounds with a not-so-happy lyrical content. Oomph! is a very heavy industrial band that leans quite far into the metal side of the genre.
