I never really was sure what the deal was with Six Feet Under, were they a regular band or what? Obituary seems to have not been doing much after the dismal "World Demise" and we all know about Chris Barnes' situation, so I guess they are, well they are for their latest release, "Alive and Dead". "Alice and Dead" is an EP consisting of 3 new songs, one of which is a cover of Judas Priest's "Grinder", and 4 live tracks of songs originally from "Haunted". So basically only 2 new songs on this CD. The first one, "Insect", is a very groovy tune in the death-rock style that Six Feet Under displayed on "Haunted", maybe with even more of a rock feeling. The other new track is "Drowning", another groovy cut. I like these two (new) songs, I've always thought that Six Feet Under had a unique sound, definitely a different style of deathmetal, not fast but heavy and groovy with cool riffs. I've never heard the original of "Grinder", but it's a cool tune, certainly a different sounding piece of music with Barnes' growling. What's to say about the live cuts, their okay, well recorded, a bit of a different look at the "Haunted" material. They are, in order; "Suffering In Ecstasy", "Human Target", "Lycanthropy", and ending with "Beneath a Black Sky". I always prefer to hear lots of new material when a band comes out with a new album I usually don't care for releases like this that are half live or whatever(or this short). For a good price "Alive and Dead" is an okay choice, and I very much recommend it if you liked there debut. It should be said that deathmetal fans that prefer more aggressive and faster music will probably hate this latest from Six Feet Under and anything else that the band comes out with.
