My Dying Bride

Like Gods Of The Sun

(c)(p)1996 Peaceville

Review by Kevin Trout

With this album, My Dying Bride have more or less picked up where they left off with "The Angel And The Dark River"; back are the ultra-moody sound they're known for. This doom metal outfit has a unique style, incorporating instruments ranging from guitar to the violin. Lyrically speaking, this is a collection of a full spectrum of emotions. Hate, despair, lust, regret, grief, it's all here. To create this sombre atmosphere, MDB uses an interesting selection of instruments. Of course a traditional metal guitar is present, but from there less common items, namely the violin, are present. It may sound strange to some to think of a violin combined with a heavily distorted guitar, but MDB does so without a problem. In this album MDB once again feature a large amount of keyboard synth, which definitely contributes to the overall atmosphere. My only complaint towards this album, although becoming less of a complaint as time goes on, is the vocal style of the singer. He sings, well more like moans out the lyrics. These vocals are somewhat of an acquired taste, and I must admit have a very mournful quality and are well suited for this style of music. "Like Gods Of The Sun" contains more songs than their last album, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, the bonus track on the digipak isn't much of a bonus, and is merely a rehash of an earlier song on the album. Quite curiously MDB's band members don't take credit for their work, as no names of the band are included. Even the band "photo" is a darkened silhouette. A quality band such as MDB need not hide their identities.
