Deeds Of Flesh

Inbreeding The Antrophagi

Repulse Records

Review by Neil St.Laurent

Thanks to Repulse America for the CD

Deeds Of Flesh is back with another installment of their flesh eating extreme death metal. After this US-based bands release of "Trading Pieces", they had to replace drummer Joey (who went back to school) with Brad, who is equally capable as Joey was. In October of 1997, after touring Europe for the first time, the band was able to record their second, and anticipated, album "Inbreeding The Anthrophagi". After the recording Brad left the band and was replaced with Ricky, and Jim (ex-Vile) was added as a second guitarist.

Deeds Of Flesh is a technical death metal band that seeks to inject adrenaline into the listener through a variety of techniques. The primary approach is simply the extreme heaviness of the album, everything is low and distorted. Being strictly guitar driven it is expected that there is are variety of guitar riffs to be heard. And as this is definitely the case, the effect of the riffs comes from the continuous transition from melodic rhythm to powerful chrunching with almost solo-like components thrown into the mix. This is where the technical edge of the music comes from; with talent shown as the energetic mixture of varying approaches in the guitar is held together with tight drum and bass tracks. Not be outdone however, the vocals alternate between guttoral growling and a kind of shrieking (much like Cannibal Corpse in the Barnes era).

There is always something changing in the music and it begins to aggravate the listener, which is of course the intent of the music. So while Deeds Of Flesh could be hard to listen to for extended periods of time, it will certainly appeal to your carnal desires.
