Novembers Doom
For Every Leaf That Falls MCD
Review by Miika Kuusinen
I have recently noticed with delight the rise of the american
doom metal scene. Novembers Doom is probably one of the oldest and
best known american doom bands. To be honest I didn’t think much of
their debut album ”Amid its Hallowed Mirth” which was released quite
a few years ago but this brand new MCD is a nice surprise. Perhaps
the new members (Mary ex- Mythic on bass and Abbas Jaffary Ember on
drums) have brought some fresh ideas to the band’s sound. Novembers
Doom still play basic slow doomdeath but unlike many European bands of
this style, there are no keyboards and only some female vocals to
create atmosphere. The music is slow, relatively simple and heavy
with growly male vocals; the lack of gothic elements makes the music
rather refreshing unlike today’s many doom bands of Europe. Even though
pace of the album isn't quite as slow as on the classic doom album
”Forest of Equilibrium” by Cathedral, the approach and feeling is
still pretty much the same. There is rather a strong death and 80’s
metal influence on this album as it is on so many american doom bands
(Morgion et al) but the melancholic atmopshere persists, lurking
behind the heaviness and brutality.
