Incantation

The Forsaken Mourning of Angelic Anguish

Relapse Records

Review by Don Stenhouse

After hearing Mortal Throne Of Nazarene I was excited to hear this disk. But after a couple of plays, it lost its black magic and I did not want to hear it anymore. Not that there was anything wrong with the music or the production, it just did not have the passion that I had hoped for.

There is an excellent cover of Scream Bloody Gore originally done by Death. There are ten other original Incantation tracks on this disk but none of them seems to have the heart of earlier recordings. The songs are all good but they do not measure up to the expectations that I have for a band such as Incantation.

The Musicianship of this band is great. The guitars and bass are excellent, displaying their prowess on the keyboards over top of brutal drumming and demonic vocals. This is a very talented bunch and that is displayed on this album; but the songs need more hooks and grooves.

Incantation is a great band with a great name. All great bands get lazy, and some get out of their rut and some don't. Most albums in Death/Black metal are way overpriced as it is, so unless you are a die-hard Incantation fan save your money.

This band is capable of delivering the goods, so don't write them off just yet. Perhaps they will be back in full force. All bands have dry spells and Incantation is no exception to the rule.

Incantation:
