Hybernoid

Advanced Technology

1998

Review by Neil St.Laurent

Thanks to the band for the cassette

The new Hybernoid has changed to the point where it isn't really correct for us to be covering it, unto itself, but since many people will be wondering what the band is now up to after their great "Todays Tomorrows Yesterday" release, here is something about the new album "Advanced Technology".

Hybernoid has taken their techo influence and gone the extra mile with it, becoming an electronic band with less than a significant influence left from the heavy music scene -- the occassional use of distorted electric guitar sounds incredible, but we are, by the very nature of this magazine, biased in this regards. "Advanced Technology" does however continue the original nature of Hybernoid, as it will stand out within the usually unexciting techo scene.

A response from the band:

Why the extreme shift/leap in direction for the music?

We don't really see it as an extreme shift but more of a mature progression from "Todays, Tomorrows, ....." - "Tomorrow" being the New material and remixes which was a hint as to where we were going next.

What other changes have occurred in the band?

Older, Wiser, 4 people on the latest disc including new member (of about 18 months) Andy Slater, who remixed the tracks 3-6 on "Todays...." - we liked what we heard and decided that would be an interesting way to go - Using Advanced Technologies to make "Advanced Technology" the album.

Is this change the reason why you've moved to Visage from Displeased?

Displeased Records are more Death Metal orientated, we are not Death Metal (if we ever were completely?) so hence the move - It was a mutually agreed move. Despite not being Death Metal we now use Synthesizers (which are not altogether new in the Hybernoid kit) to create heavy and aggressive music, but which has a Dance Music element (particularly drums and percussion wise)

Is the tape the final mix or will it sound somewhat different on the CD?

The cassette is exactly how the CD will be exept that the cassette was taped from a provisional Cut on CDR.
