Kampfar

Season of Mist 1995

Review by Richard Stuart

In case you didn't already know, this is another of those 'demo put onto CD' jobs. 2 of the 3 tracks here are from Kampfar's limited handnumbered promo tape 1994/1995, and the last song is presumably either a more recent or totally ancient track. The whole affair lasts for just under 19 minutes.

Kampfar is the 'new' one-man band of Dolk, who used to be in Mock. Like Mock, Kampfar is a Norwegian band which plays typically Norwegian Black Metal-inspired music with the usual elements such as a harsh guitar tone, rasped vocals etc. - but Kampfar is more 'Viking' oriented. Comparisons have rightfully been made in the past to Bathory, and if Hades had a less claustrophobic/muffled sound (and drums which were higher in the mix), they'd probably sound quite similar to Kampfar. The sound here is quite strong, despite the typical 'Norwegian Black Metal demo' limitations - reminding me somewhat of Troll's excellent 'Trollstorm Over Nidingjuv' (which preceded the slightly more disappointing full-length Troll offering, 'Drep De Kristne.')

Unfortunately, there are some 'Viking chants' here, which are palatable on the first track (since they're hidden in the mix), but simply don't work on the second track. I wish bands would just not bother including 'clean' vocals, unless they can actually sing properly. The third track is quite different frm the previous two, having a weaker sound and with no guitar. It's also a lot shorter than the epic 9 and 7 minuters before it.

Well, it's one of 'those,' isn't it - if you like the style, you'll probably like this, but if Norwegian Black/Viking Metal isn't your 'thing,' then this release won't convert you. I'd personally recommend that you at least give it a listen should you get the chance - I find this a very enjoyable listen, if not totally original or groundbreaking. I believe there is a full length Kampfar album available too, so look out for that also.
