Death Squad

Demo 97

Review by Neil StLaurent

Thanks to Death Squad for the tape

Ah yes, more death metal. The originality of a band in this genre can basically be inferred from how much of the band's material one needs to listen to in order to understand their style. With some bands you only need 30 seconds; with others such as Death Squad you'll need about 14 minutes (which is not coincidently the approximate length of the demo).

Bringing forth a style from the dying embers of old school, Jared Drace manages to do something a little different with the music. On the brink of being doomdeath helps describe the generally slow lumbering parts of the music. Without a doubt however the guttural growling disrupts any harmony that may occur -- and combined with the faster moments makes for an assuredly extreme death recording.

Jared appears very interested in the technical side of the music without wanting to lose the raw aggression. Strong riffs and melodies, which in the absence of the vocals may actually be harmonic, give a very flavoured album.

It's really a shame that the production on this demo cassette is substandard. An abundance of noise and mixing problems really hurt Death Squad's sound. Jared could certainly do with some more money put out an amazing CD. In the meantime this demo will pleasantly surprise you.

Death Squad is Jared Drace with Joe Beninati on drums for this recording
