Skullcrusher

Tortured to Death, 1997

Review by Neil StLaurent

Thanks to Skullcrusher for the tape

Death metal from the land of Sweden is always a treat. Skullcrusher have opted for an entirely low and intense musical style complete with the deep guttural and throaty growls. The music ranges from a standard metal speed right up to the incredibly fast death speeds at times. The guitar driven music keeps you moving at all times (provided you're not firmly planted in your listening chair) and would be great music to mosh to. Interestingly the beat is as much provided by the rhythm guitar as it is by the drums -- which is really responsible for the very aggressive emotional edge to the demo.

It's unfortunate that the production quality of this demo just isn't up to par. Much of what probably sounds much better is somehow lost on this tape. The guitar track is often too low to really hear it properly, and the volume generally fluxuates.

Some solid riffs and aggressive music that sticks fairly true to the death genre. While there is nothing that really makes Skullcrusher stand out from the crowd, there is nothing that makes them fade into the shadows. All around a decent demo that convinces one that a well produced album is in order.
