Nile
Rameses Bringer of War
1997
Review by Neil StLaurent
Thanks to Visceral Prod for the Tape
Often I get a tape claiming to be a new form of death metal.
Ocasionally, as with Nile, the proclamation is correct. To show
that they aren't just doing something different because they're unable
to play the old forms, the demo opens up with an almost insanely fast
song that is there to rip you apart rather than to provide a
meaningful listening experience. The title song's intro reminds me a
lot of Bal-Sagoth's new overpowering classical feel. But then Nile
just breaks out into blazing death metal again...
The interesting song is the third song, most of which is in some
language I don't recognize, probably one of the Egyptian languages --
black metal Set style. Its well achieved tribal/ritual
style intrigues me as to what their upcoming album will sound like.
Being a short demo there isn't much to say. Nile plays some
amazingly nice and fast death metal, but judging by their info sheets
and bio their October release will likely have a lot more of the type
of music from the third song. Either way, I'm eagerly anticipating
the release.
