Hell-Born

Hell-Born

Pagan Records, 1996

Review by Brett Benzie

Hell-Born is basically Les + Baal Ravenlock, from Behemoth, playing early Morbid Angel-style death/war metal. Les does performs all the guitars and bass, while Ravenlock assumes drum and vocal duties.

Musically, Hell-Born is about combining the harmonies these two have employed in their main band, with the ripping intensity and heaviness of Death Metal. And they do it well, as sometimes the bass thunders through the mix, creating an almost ambient effect... very... Black Metal! Its funny to note that Ravenlock's vocals are suspiciously close to Nergal's from his "other" band... That same gasping desperado rasp.

Four original songs, (the best being the opener, "Inverted", but all are great tunes) all over 5 minutes long, and a ripsnorting cover of Destruction's "Antichrist". At 25 mins, its only really an mCD, and I was charged accordingly.

The packaging leaves a bit to be desired. Like 2 cd-single cardboard sleeves, stuck together.. Different I guess, but I'd take a jewelcase any day, as it's already beginning to show signs of wear. But that's probably got more to do with the fact that I just can't put this down!.
