Hate Machine

It's All Good

Freak Is My Name, 1997

Review by Neil StLaurent

Thanks to Urban Warfare/Trend Management for the CD

Hate Machine provides a change by not actually making any changes. Instead of trying to push the envelope of music, they've decided to look back at what's been done and collect what they consider to be the best metal styles into an album they call "It's All Good". Influences that range from Pantera to Death Angel combine themselves in such a manner to produce original sounding metal, yet nothing that can really be called a unique own style -- with the exception of the vocals which continually trade between the old Death Angel clean singing and the Phil Anselmo harsh growl-like vocals.

I hate to dwell on comparisons for too long. Hate Machine plays some very listenable music that quite understandably has received its fair share of radio play and has made it into the hands of many fans. The music has the strong classic feel of speed metal. No huge epics, sagas present here. It has much more of a realist feel to it. The riffs and structures vary quite a bit, complete from flowing to power metal muting. Each band member gets his chance to shine through on the album at some point or another, and the players do work well together also.

It appears as though a group of guys got together with the intention of producing enjoyable metal, and they did just that. The album has a lot to offer to the classic metal-head and is a nice refresher to those of us into the newer styles.

Hate Machine is:

Jed Seaver - Vocals
