"Unpop" will be quite a surprise to those that once knew Pyogensis as a somewhat gothic deathmetal band. It'll be quite a welcoming from those who claim the gothic is merely pop in disguise though...
Pyogensis is [now] a combination punk-rock, alternative, pop-rock band, with the best comparision I can think of being to somebody like Weezer or the Bare Naked Ladies. Don't shiver too quickly though, for the music contained within is actually fairly decent. It's a tossup as to whether the guitar drives the music or the vocals do. The distorted guitar keeps generally to a rhythm section while the clean non-aggressive singing basically keeps the lead varied -- although a higher somewhat clean finger picked guitar does contribute to the lead at times as well. Thus if you don't take a liking to Tim's or Flo's voice then you won't enjoy the album.
The audible influences seem to range from 50's pop/rock to 90's hard alternative. Guitars play simple rhythms, flowing melodies, power chords, and occassionally pull together some stronger muted sections. There is a continuous token presence of the background sound when the lead kicks in -- the guitar and vocal lead quite often overwhelm anything interesting in the background. Additionally a synth sound sometimes makes it's presence, but not too often.
Although I said the music is fairly decent, that is in relation to the various genres is represents. I'm doubting that most people who listen to extreme music will enjoy this CD in the slightest bit. There is however that continuous guitar presence which may be enough to keep some people interested. I suppose if you're into the punk rock and alternative scene (such as Green Day and the aforementioned) you will enjoy "Unpop".
