Plan E

E For Your Eyes

(c)(p)1996

Review by Neil St.Laurent

Thanks to E Records for the CDs

This 3" MCD was to sent to us along with it's earlier counterpart, the "E for your Ears" 3" MCD.

Of all the things that would distinguish their style, the lacking of a guitar is the most important. The band chooses to use a bass, soft or non-distorted, and another bass, hard or distorted. Needless to say the resulting sound is quite heavy. Without a driving guitar the intensity level is kept fairly low. Additionally the general riffing combined with clean vocal content try for a very relaxed, almost carefree style of music -- the music has no typical strong happy or slightly depressive emotional tendency. Given the two bass and an everpresent keyboard the general moods contain a somewhat mystical quality.

It's kind of hard to describe the style of music, since so many of our descriptive terms inevitably deal with what the guitar is doing. The melodies are quite simple, where the soft bass keeps very much a standard bass track quality, but without the guitar it's very easy to distinguish and hear within the music. The hard bass does very short appearances with short, often muted, riffs. The overall sound is quite foreign to the hard and heavy music scenes. It doesn't have much aggression or intensity, but possess strange emotional content, and it'd be nice to hear them again when they do something longer than this in order to get a better feel for the music.
