Nickelback

Curb

(c)1996 Nickelback

Review by Neil St.Laurent

"Curb" includes much of what was on Nickelback's original release plus a selection of new songs. The music style really hasn't changed that much, still being very much an alternative ligther style of rock. Various parts of "Pusher" and some other songs have a slight trace of a Crash Test Dummies style, which adds a little something to the mixture of the music. A combination of clean and distorted guitar vary the music between the mellow and intense parts. The riffs are quite simple, but that lends most of the appeal to the music. It isn't extremely heavy; it'll approach quite a different market than would metal. As with a lot of guitar driven music the drums and bass really are only present as filler for the background sound: nothing special happens in those areas. This should however not rule out that those tracks work quite effectively.

The most unique aspect to Nickelback comes with the raspy unrefined voice of Chad Kroeger. He sort of shouts and often approaches singing, but never quite reaches any level of perfection. This is very good for the music though, giving it a little bit of distinction from the masses and really adds to the emotional feel.

While still a developing band Nickelback definitely qualifies to be ranked right up against with the mainstream bands -- probably resulting them in getting a harsher review than they deserve. With their fragmented, muted, guitar driven style Nickelback is a formidable band.
