Mortal Remains

No Cash Flow

Review by Neil St.Laurent

Thanks to Tender Stone for the CD

The immediate comparison for Mortal Remains is to Biohazard, and why not, they have that style of hardcore that Biohazard almost perfected in their former releases. So Mortal Remains follows in the footsteps of the great New York bands. When doing this originality is none to simple of a task. For the most part "No Cash Flow" does have a style that is different enough from the others to make the band more than just another hardcore album.

The riffs are powerful and aggressive, and they actually come across as such in the recording. It's amazing how far you can push muted guitars and a broken sound to get that very sharp-edged sound. Okay, maybe it can often go too far. At some point the band should have started to look for other ways to get the emotion into their music. They do attempt the melodic parts as separators, but it's not quite enough to prevent the music from becoming repetitive at times. This is probably overly harsh since there is a great deal of variety. Additionally the harsh vocals of Pacheco do an average job of keeping the music alive.

Dedicated fans of the genre will be able to listen to Mortal Remains without any real complaints. The music is strong and aggressive. Some songs really shine through, but others tend to fall a little flat. Overall "No Cash Flow" is an average album that could be excellent if it were just a little more exciting.

NOTE: There is one hidden track mentioned in the liner as "Listen On For In-bred Jed And The Kissin' Cousins". It is total shit and should not have been included even as a joke.
