Dead By Dawn

After I Eat Your Brains

Review by Neil St.Laurent

Thanks to DFR Productions for the CD

The CD opens up with an odd deep vocal segment, which, in case your brain can't hear things backwards and with not quite so much distortion, roughly says "was this different at the beginning".

Dead By Dawn's musical fare is somewhere in the realm of metal. The guitar rhythm is fairly consistent and at a slow to mid pace. With a bit of palm muting and simple riffs the overall music becomes very broken at times with no real flow from section to section. I struggle to really find any particular style that these guys can call their own though, it all sounds very much like standard tried and true metal fare. That in itself wouldn't be so bad, except that there is something missing from this album. The aggression, and thus emotion, in the album is deficient. After listening to the album for the first time I thought that it was good, but there was nothing to compell me to press play again. This changes quite a lot at points in the album, and more often than not it is relative to the current vocal style. Generally a screaming style the vocals sometimes change to a lower pitch almost growl-like style. The lower pitch vocals and the accompanying style are the most enjoyable portions of the album. Overall the deficient emotion is likely attributable to the mismatch in vocal/music styles. It's really too bad about this since they are said to have extremely intense live shows.

So in the end I'm going to say this is a fairly average album. It just doesn't have much of anything to make it stand out from the rest of the metal that is out there.
