Bergthron

Verhorgen In Den Tieten Der Walder

(c)(p)1997 Perverted Taste

Review by Brett Benzie

I bought this album on the premise that it was "another bloody Fenriz side project", (which in itself holds great promise, to these trained ears) and "epic/symphonic, synth blackmetal". Really, the only part of that claim which is true would be the "synth" bit, because almost the entire album sounds like it was recorded on a Casio keyboard. The french horns and flutes are used to full effect, really highlighting my reasons for thinking thus. No mention of Fenriz in the (German) liner notes, nor in the band photos (that I could make out, anyway) either, nor does it hold that certain quality in the songwriting that Fenriz has become renowned for (in certain circles)

The album itself is 1 track, divided into 8 or so definite tracks, most of which consist of synth laden blackmetal-rock (hey, a new term!), which is neither epic, nor really symphonic...nor blackmetal, really.

It's more goth-rock, mutated with blackmetal. I'm not into goth-rock at all, so purists will no-doubt disagree, but thats my statement, and I'm sticking to it. Not bad, but it certainly doesn't grab the ear. Something which would serve well as background music, or stuff you'd listen to, when what you're doing is more important than actually listening to the disc.
