Abel & Cain

Hands Off Cain

1996

Review by Neil St.Laurent

Thanks to Abel & Cain for the tape

This relatively unknown band comes to us from Italy. Not knowing their language I can't read the other reviews to see what other people think of them. I'm sure it says something nice though. Once influenced mainly by NWOBHM, A&C decided to explore new areas of music, and "Hands Off Cain" would be their first attempt at doing this. Intentionally the sounds on the four songs of this demo are quite different in nature, yet holding a few common qualities. Generally it's a standard breed of metal with a little bit of experimentation -- the flute interlude on Prometheus is quite nice, not to mention the somewhat Celtic sounds on the demo's opening. Two guitars, neither of which hold lead or backing status, give A&C a sound similar to that of the classic 80's bands, not just the NWOBHM ones. Clean vocals ranging from some speaking to shouting round out that classic sound. The willingness to do different things in the music really gives A&C an original sound. While the transitions between are questionable, the guitarless and/or simple melodic interludes give additional emotional atmosphere to the music.

While a fairly decent sounding demo there are obviously production flaws -- what would you expect you have six people and a 4-track mixer. The music isn't as tight as it should be, but the basic quality is there and it is very listenable. Adding intelligent lyrics gives "Hands Off Cain" a somewhat serious nature, yet this is counteracted by the included cartoon drawings of the band members.

A decent band that would greatly benefit from a real studio.
